Materials
If you are a "freshman" scrapbooker, there are some basic supplies that you will need in order to get started in this awesome hobby.

First, you will need to choose an album size.  When choosing an album, there are several things to factor into your decision.  Is this a gift album, a brag book, a baby's book, a family album, or something else?   Small albums, such as the 5 x 7 size work well for Grandma's brag book or the guest registry for your home.  These also work well for gift albums.  Two frequently purchased album sizes are the 8 1/2 x 11 and 12 x 12 books.  The 8 1/2 x 11 album is the most commonly used.  It is a good size to work with for any project.  The 12 x 12 size is becoming more popular because one can fit more photos and memorabilia on a page.  This size is more expensive though.  There are several types of albums to choose from as well.  There is the strap hinge, such as the ones sold by Creative Memories and Westrim.  There are also post-bound, spiral bound, and three-ring binder type albums.  I prefer either post-bound or three ring binders so that I am not tied down to doing my pages in a certain order.  I can move my pages around as I please.

After choosing an album, you must make sure you have a good, sharp pair of scissors.  I like to have a standard sized pair and a small, fine-tipped pair for cutting sharp corners or the center from letters.  A paper trimmer is also a requirement if you want easy, straight cuts.

Another necessity is an acid-free adhesive.  There are many kinds to choose from.  There are glue pens, glue sticks, double sided tape, tape runners, photo tabs, and more.  I like to have different kinds for different projects.  I generally use photo splits or a tape runner for adhering my pictures to a page.  I save glue pens for embellishments.

An additional necessity is a good quality, acid-free writing pen.  It is a must for journaling.

Although some would argue the "necessity" of this purchase, most scrapbookers wouldn't dream of leaving this out of their albums, and that is solid-colored card stock or patterned paper for embellishment and matting.  There are several sizes and tons of designs to choose from.

Acid free page protectors are needed to keep fingerprints and other messes away from your pictures.
